How do I edit a page?
Editing a page is very easy; there is an "Edit page" button at the top right of the menu. Simply click on it, and an editor will pop up. Make your changes and click "Save" or "Cancel".
How do I add a page to the site?
Creating a page is also quite simple; just click "Create page". You will have to name the page and select its location in the file hierarchy.
How do I add a file to the list of manuals (or papers for reading, or any list of files)?
Some of the pages can accept attachments or file uploads; one might imagine that this would be a good way to post files to the site. Unfortunately, we have a strict 100MB limit for all of the content on the site, and at present we cannot simply pay money to increase this (we would if Google would allow it!).
The preferred method is to link your document to the page, following these steps. Google Docs is a good place to upload your files, because they give you enormous amounts of disk space.
NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW!!!!
Use the shiny shared labwide Google account to upload. (This way, we don't have to hunt you down to find a file three years after you left the lab, because they're all in the same place!)
vhlabshare@gmail.com password is the same as for everything else.
1) Go to docs.google.com
2) Click Upload to the left
3) Select your file or files for upload. Then, select the destination folder. Finally, select your sharing preferences, choosing "Anyone with the link to this file can view". Upload the file.
4) Click on the file of interest. This will bring up the page in a web browser. When the page opens, go to the Sharing button on the right, and copy THAT URL to the clipboard. (IMPORTANT: Do not simply copy the URL in your browser; this will not allow other people to view the document, it needs to be the URL from the "sharing" window.)
5) Finally, edit the page on the site where you would like to link the file. Enter your text, then select the text, and click Link in the editor toolbar. Choose Web address, and Paste the URL of your document into the address field. I like to choose the Open in New Window option at the bottom. Then click Ok and Save your changes and it should be all set.
